The DALE Foundation, the official affiliate of the Dental Assisting National Board, Inc. (DANB), has launched a new online continuing education (CE) program for dental assistants: Behavioral Guidance and Management for the Pediatric Dental Patient.

The online, interactive course guides learners through a pre-assessment of 10 questions, instruction in relevant topics and a post-course assessment of 50 questions. Participants earn six CE credits upon successful completion of the course.

By completing the course, learners will review essential topics and learn how to:

  • Understand age-specific mental, emotional and social developmental features of the pediatric dental patient
  • Recognize the importance of flexibility and adaptability when working with pediatric and special needs patients
  • Communicate and respond appropriately when faced with challenging behaviors in pediatric and special needs patients
  • Apply commonly used behavior management techniques to virtual interactions with pediatric and special needs patients

As with other courses from the DALE Foundation, Behavioral Guidance and Management for the Pediatric Dental Patient includes printable notes and valuable resources, like AAPD guidelines and sample informed consent forms.

The course was developed by the DALE Foundation in conjunction with the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) and AAPD subject matter experts: Sarat Thikkurissy, D.D.S., M.S.; Man Wai Ng, D.D.S., M.P.H.; Tiffany Benton, CDA; with pediatric dental office manager Amy Paundlay, CDA.

“This course was created in response to a survey of our members, which indicated a need for a greater level of dental assistant competency in this important area,” said Scott Dalhouse, AAPD Educational Affairs Manager. “We think this course will be a valuable resource for both our members and their staff.”

“The purpose of this recent collaboration with AAPD is to develop continuing education for dental assistants who wish to improve their skills in areas of particular importance in a pediatric dental practice,” said Cindy Durley, M.Ed., MBA, Executive Director of DANB and the DALE Foundation.
