Iowa CDE Requirements

Dental Assistant qualified in radiography

# CDE Required: 2 hours every two years

Required Topics: Dental radiography

Note: In order to renew a radiography qualification, the applicant must submit a statement confirming that the applicant is currently certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) that includes a hands-on component, including the certificate’s expiration date. This certificate must be made available to the Iowa Board upon request.

Registered Dental Assistant

# CDE Required: 20 hours every two years

Required Topics:

  • (Beginning 9/1/2018) Iowa Jurisprudence – at least one hour every two years
  • CPR - maximum of three hours; must be taken through a nationally recognized provider and include a hands-on, clinical component. A CPR course may include an online component provided there is an in-person portion prior to the certification being issued. 
  • (Beginning 9/1/2018) Infection Control – at least one hour every two years
  • Mandatory Reporter Training for Child Abuse and Dependent Adult Abuse: Training is required within six months of employment and every 5 years thereafter (course hours can be credited toward CDE requirement for renewal period). Training must address identification and reporting of child abuse, dependent adult abuse, or both, depending on practice setting. Completion of training shall result in two hours of continuing education credit.

A maximum of 12 hours of continuing education may be earned in self-study or home study
