Texas CDE Requirements

Registered Dental Assistant
Dental Assistant with nitrous oxide monitoring certificate

To renew any certificate issued by the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners, a dental assistant must complete six hours of continuing education each year in areas covering dental assisting duties. Dental assistants who hold two or more certificates are required to complete 12 hours of continuing education per year to renew all certificates held by the dental assistant. A dental assistant may fulfill continuing education requirements through Board-approved self-study, interactive computer courses or lecture courses. RDA's annual renewal of registration requires RDA to submit proof the applicant has completed current course in BLS.

For more information refer to the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners document regarding continuing education.

*Note: Currently, the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners issues only the RDA certificate and the nitrous oxide monitoring certificate to dental assistants.

Note: Effective May 1, 2018, Registered Dental Assistants are allowed to carry forward 6 hours of CE from their previous renewal cycle.
