Radiography Requirements

To take dental radiographs under the direct supervision of a dentist, one must

1a. Be an On-the-Job Trained Dental Assistant (OJT), AND

1b. Complete a course in radiological techniques and safeguards, AND

1c. Pass the DANB Radiation Health and Safety (RHS) exam or other exam approved by the board, within one year of the course completion,

OR

2a. Be a Massachusetts Formally Trained Dental Assistant (FTDA), AND

2b. Successfully complete a course with a curriculum that complies with Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) standards for radiological techniques and safeguards in dentistry.

To take dental radiographs under the general supervision of a dentist, one must:

3a. Hold a current national DANB Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) certification, or

3b. Be a Massachusetts Expanded Function Dental Assistant (EFDA)

AND

3c. Successfully complete a course with a curriculum that complies with Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) standards for radiological techniques and safeguards in dentistry.

Dental Assisting Job Titles and Requirements for Each Level

Note: The legislature of Massachusetts passed a law in January 2009, House Bill 5180, which will require dental assistants to register with the Board of Registration in Dentistry, effective July 1, 2009. The Massachusetts Board of Registration in Dentistry will establish the rules and regulations to implement this bill.

On-the-Job Trained (OJT) Dental Assistant

An On-the-Job Trained Dental Assistant in the state of Massachusetts must be trained in the dental office under the supervision of a licensed dentist.

Formally Trained Dental Assistant (FTDA)

To qualify as a Formally Trained Dental Assistant in the state of Massachusetts, one must:

1. Successfully complete a dental assisting program of not less than one year, for dental assistants accredited or recognized by:

    a. Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) or
    b. New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) or 
    c. Meets the standards of the Massachusetts Department of Education

DANB Certified Dental Assistant (CDA)

To qualify as a DANB CDA, one must:

Hold a current national DANB CDA certification.

Expanded Function Dental Assistant (EFDA)

To qualify as an Expanded Function Dental Assistant (EFDA) in the state of Massachusetts, one must:

1. Be a graduate of a CODA-accredited dental assisting program or school, AND

2. Hold a current national DANB CDA certification, AND

3. Complete a formal program in expanded functions at a CODA-accredited program.
